“Pull the slack out of you!” is commonly told to (or yelled at) the lifter before a Deadlift is executed. This verbal cue serves as a reminder or a pre-lift check to ensure the set up is tight before the pull. This can help to ensure that the hamstrings and glutes takes most of the load and the weight isn’t excessively distributed to the lower back.
When referencing to tightening the set up in a Deadlift, the two main joints under examination are our Shoulder and Hip joints.
To prevent the weight on the bar from dragging our shoulders forward and therefore causing the upper back to round, we need to keep the shoulders back and lock it in position through engaging the lats. This can be achieved through using the physical cue of squeezing down hard on the armpits and keeping the chest opened.
To prevent an early rise of the hips which often is followed by an excessive use (and rounding) of the lower back to straighten up in the Deadlift, we need to secure the hip position that allows us to tighten the hamstrings. The hunt for this position is commonly seen among lifters during the set up where they re-bend at the knees slightly before moving the bar. We can get to this position by pushing your hips back while maintaining a flat lower-back.
Last but not least, with the two joints in place, brace your core before you pull. The mastery of the Deadlift set up takes lots of practice and patience working with lighter weights. Once you get it figured out, the weights will come. Happy Deadlifting!

Some movement cues to look out for in class regarding the split jerk: ✔ Position of the torso on the dip
✔ Spacing of the feet in the catch ✔ Distribution of weight between the front and back foot, and catching the bar over the middle of our bodies #crossfitmobilus

I started CrossFit at the beginning of 2013. Before that I had been playing rugby my entire life. I started CrossFit as a way for me to get ready for the upcoming rugby season. This would be my last one season as I was hooked after one session. I can vividly remember my second session of CrossFit and doing Fran. It took me 13:32. • • •
I am a firm believer that it is the small things in exercise and in life that make all the difference. Trying to make huge changes at the flick of a switch is unsustainable and unrealistic, we need to try make ourself 1% better everyday. • • •
We can often become too focused on what someone else can do and not on how we can improve ourselves. As well as trying to have as much fun as possible along the way. Or else what’s the point! #crossfitmobilus
